Wooden Headphones??? + 2010 Winter gear

What Tha? Yep it's not a typo, wooden headphones are here, they're earbuds even. Of course it took the nutters in the lab at Skullcandy to hook these up. The Skullcandy Holua headphones are wood earbud style headphones that sound soo good, with really smooth deep bass and a crisp top end they suit the audiophile in us all. Will sound fantastic listening to classics on vinyl. They look sick too, with laser cut logo's and the smooth wood finish mmm nice. Check em out.

This week i've been up to CHCH to check some 2010 winter product, yes we do have order it this far in advance, and it is looking super hot i've gotta say. A couple of highlights for me were the Thraxis Triple Boa snowboard boot from K2 Snowboards, yep that's right, triple boa, 2 for the front of the boot, top & bottom and one for the liner. Ride snowboards are putting Wedgie tech in almost all their bindings, which cants the base of the binding toward the centre of the board to rduce the strain on your lower leg, sounds like the goods to me, looking forward to testing it this winter. I gotta give props out to my man Big Si, K2 snowboards rep, for ordering a size 13 sample boot for me to try on, normally Chris tries on all the boots and I take the notes but i finally got to have go, thanks mate. I'll be rocking those K2 Darko boots this winter, mean.
Anyway, i'll be giving more sneak peeks at 2010 boards, boots, bindings and outerwear over the coming weeks so keep checking in you might spot your next piece of kit.

Peace
Matt

i saw this... it made me smile.... i wanted to share!

Seeing as I work for a retail shop and my role is Marketing & Communications, and I went to university and did media and popular culture studies, its only natural then, that i love and appreciate good advertising, and abhor bad advertising.

2 posts ago, I posted the Limited ed. Danny Kass Nike Snowboarding boot. Not only do I love the design of the boot, and Danny Kass, but the ad is a real gem in and of itself.

Good ads have me at first just enjoying them as a passive consumer, and of course, the moment I think about the ad again, not only does that lead to the fact the ad was effective... but I start to wonder why.

I'm not going to get into any of the reasons why I personally believe ads are good or not... but I thought I would share two more ads that I absolutely love, both for distinctly different reasons - although both use humour, like the danny kass one.

As I 'researched' into this post, I came across a few more funny ads that I really enjoyed. I could probably fill this post with more ads, but isn't that the problem with entertainment these days, too much advertising?

Here's the first one from Durex:

And here's the 2nd one from Smirnoff:
What do you think of these ads??? did they make any impression you?

Winter X Games, oh yeah it's on!

Ahh it's that time of year again, when the biggest game in action sports hits the snow. Winter x Games 13 has just begun and we've got some good Kiwi representation this year. Wanaka local boys and Oakley and Skullcandy team riders Jossi and Byron Wells are both competing this year. This will be Byron's first time at X and he's well deserving with some great results and solid riding over the last year. Jossi will be looking to improve on his 5th placing at last years Winter x Games. Good luck to both of them in the Superpipe.
Speaking of results, Base teamrider Mack James riding for K2 Snowboards, Smith Optics and Sessions has just notched up a gold medal at the US Junior Nationals series at Copper Mountain in the 14 -15yr age group. This has qualified him for the US Jr Nationals, Congrats Mack from the whole BASE Crew. Also competing at the same event was
BASE Team rider Tim Herbert riding for Ride Snowboards Smith Optics and Groovstar Outerwear has scored a good 4th placing in the 11-13yr age group.Nice work Tim, keep ripping.

Look out for some upcoming posts from
Base's roving worldwide reporters with tales of deep pow and party carnage.

Have a good weekend
Matt

Sweet Job!

Do you ever just wish someone would pay you to enjoy yourself??? Well Tourism Queensland is proposing just that. Read the article below:

Island caretaker job offer: get paid $150,000 to swim, snorkel

Mex Cooper
January 12, 2009
Queensland's latest tourism campaign is giving job seekers the chance to get paid $150,000 to live six months rent-free on the Great Barrier Reef.
As their Christmas holidays fade and the credit crunch begins to bite, office workers dreaming of a fresh start are being tempted to apply for "the best job in the world".
Tourism Queensland is looking for applicants willing to walk white sandy beaches, sit under palm trees and swim with turtles as they soak up the sun.
The successful candidate will be asked to keep a blog and photo diary in exchange for six months rent-free on Hamilton Island as part of a $150,000 salary package that includes return airfares and travel insurance.
Australians and overseas applicants must be willing to "swim, snorkel, make friends with locals and generally enjoy the tropical Queensland climate and lifestyle".
The `island caretaker' position was created as part of a three-year $1.7 million marketing strategy by Tourism Queensland.
But Tourism Queensland chief Anthony Hayes said the job was not just a publicity stunt.
"Yes this is part of a unique Tourism Queensland strategy to promote the islands of the Great Barrier Reef internationally, but candidates will have to go through a genuine recruitment process," he said.
Australian Marketing Institute president Roger James said the campaign was an interesting idea but would need innovative marketing to make sure the winning candidate's blog was as effective as traditional advertising.
"I've got to decide to log on to the blog ... and to make that work you have to have a communication that is arresting and interesting," he said.
"If we end up with little videos or this person wandering around the islands and they're just happy snaps it may not generate much interest at all.
"On the other hand, if it is something new and arresting and inventive it may be an absolute huge hit."
The campaign was launched overseas today and a domestic launch will follow this weekend but Mr James said it was likely an overseas applicant would be picked.
The winning candidate will be chosen from a shortlist of 11 and must be a good swimmer, excellent communicator, be able to speak and write English, have an adventurous attitude, enjoy snorkelling and/or diving and be willing to try new things.
The job includes free accommodation in a three-bedroom home on Hamilton Island complete with plunge pool, views of the Whitsunday Islands and golf buggy.
The caretaker will promote the Great Barrier Reef islands, give media interviews and take care of a "few minor tasks" throughout their tenure beginning on July 1.

Sounds like a sweet deal for the right candidate... Start getting your CV's ready!

peace,
Amy

Vail skier Exposure

Well news is news no matter how you cut it. here's a great little gem for you.... care of the smokinggun.com

Skier Suffers Exposure

Man left dangling upside down, pantsless after Vail lift mishap

JANUARY 6--In a bizarre incident that will surely lead to litigation (or an out-of-court settlement), a skier at Colorado's ritzy Vail resort was left dangling upside down and pantsless from a chairlift last Thursday morning. The January 1 mishap apparently occurred after the male skier, 48, and a child boarded a high-speed lift in Vail's Blue Sky Basin. It appears that the chairlift's fold-down seat was somehow not in the lowered position, which caused the man to partially fall through the resulting gap. His right ski got jammed in the ascending chairlift, and that kept him upended since his boot never dislodged from its binding. As seen in the photos, which were snapped by fellow skiers, the Skyline Express lift was stopped shortly after the pair's botched boarding resulted in the man dangling from the lift. The exposed skier was stuck for about 15 minutes before Vail personnel backed the lift up and successfully dislodged the unidentified man from the four-seat chair. The images were taken by Marty Odom, a local photographer who happened upon the rescue scene . In a statement released this afternoon, Vail Resorts, which operates the ski area, reported that the skier was not injured after being "suspended for approximately seven minutes." The press release did not explain how the mishap occurred, only that "the man was caught on the chair."

I totally didn't believe this story, that is until I found out, the photographer got in trouble for it and the Vail Daily News has been inundated with complaints for running it. The photographer lied about being on personal time with his own camera, has since got found out and has been suspended from work, as the pics have been posted on over 30,000 websites.

Is it poor taste? is it just something that is newsworthy? Regardless, this is what all the buzz is about so judge for yourself.

peace,

Amy

The Sun and The Rain

It's hot, it's wet, it's weird. Despite cooking my brain in my super hot up stairs office, out side it's raining cats and dogs... and rain, and there's a heavy rain warning for the southern lakes today. It's a volatile wee spot we have down here let me tell ya. But it must be sunny some where in NZ because i've had a lot of inquires this week for Oakley M-Frame lenses, and they all wanted blue iridium too, sounds like some new years resolutions to get fit and digging out the old Oakley M-Frames from that draw in the spare room and finding the reason you stopped wearing them was because you thrashed out the lenses when they fell off playing beach volleyball? Or something like that, Or not? But if you need that sort of stuff, Oakley lenses and bits, we can get it for ya.
I must mention some tunes i've been listening to of late, if you like your beats big banging and squelchy check out Deadmau5. This crazy canadian has been killing it on the international electronic music scene, winning awards, rocking huge parties and remixing all kinds of tunes. What i really love is that he Dj's wearing a massive mouse head mask with strobe eyeballs, now that should get your night charging.

Well have a great weekend peeps
Peace

2 riders, 4 blogs

Either way you look at it I'm a fan.

I'm following blogs now. I never used to, and now that I am, I'm slowly expanding my blog reading, although my blog list looks like I follow one person more, because of a recurring name.

Snowboarder's Jeremy Jones (you know the one that is all about big mountain freeriding, roots starting in Truckee) has a blog and Jeremy Jones (you know the one that is all about crazy tricks off roofs, walls, rails etc. from SLC) has his glob. You should read 'em and rate 'em.

On Jeremy Jones (the one from SLC) other blog he talks about the name of his site and the other Jeremy Jones (the one from Truckee), who also has another blog.

am I confusing you yet?

Happy reading!

peace,
Amy

Happy NEW YEAR!!!

Hey World,

Happy New Year!, So here we are, 2009 already, where did 2008 go, felt like a blur to me. Plenty of good times though, and i'm betting 09 has got even more in store. Things have been super hectic down in Wanaka with the usual influx of 20000 odd family's, bogans and revelers. Base has been pretty crazy, i even got stuck at the front of the shop on the 27th, i couldn't even get to the counter there were so many people swarming thru the shop. All good though.
So my Favourite stunt on New Years was definitely Robbie Maddison jumping his moto bike onto the top of the replica Arc de Triomphe in Las Vegas, then bomb dropping off. Check out the video, who jumps a motorbike onto something as high as a 10 story building, and then boosts off it, crazy.

Look out for a new layout to the
Base home page coming soon, should give you all easier access to the stuff you love, plus plenty of new product coming soon.
In the mean time, take care, look out for your fellow peeps and stay safe on the roads these holidays
Peace
Matt
