CARDRONA EXPANDS TERRAIN FOR 2010 SEASON

SOUTHERN LAKES, New Zealand (xx January 2010) Cardrona Alpine Resort is installing a fourth chairlift this summer in phase one of an expansion project which will increase the resort’s boundaries and the number of intermediate and advanced runs on offer.  This means that Cardrona will now have more chairlifts than any other South Island mountain.

The Valley View quad will extend the resort’s terrain from the bottom of the Whitestar lift down to the Speed Straight section of the access road.  The former Captains Quad lift’s new position will mean Cardrona’s lift-serviced vertical will increase by 250 metres and the ski area will grow to a total size of 345 hectares.  An additional car park will be built for season pass holders for easy and quick access on to the lift, when in operation.

The new Valley View Quad will increase Cardrona’s lift-serviced vertical to a total of 600 metres which will enable the resort to build a FIS homologated downhill course named “Goldrush”.  As part of this development a 40 metre tunnel is being installed to allow uninterrupted access from the Captains Express to the bottom of the Whitestar Express.

“It is very rewarding to be able to open up new terrain for Cardrona customers to enjoy” said Cardrona sales and marketing manager, Nadia Ellis. “This development has been in the pipelines for a few years so it’s really great to see phase one underway.”

Phase two will continue next summer with the installation of extensive snowmaking in the Valley View area to ensure top to bottom skiing throughout the season.  Further groundwork will also be carried out to develop trails in the area.

Base Freeride Team Riding Day Out!

Well school holidays has been manic, but it makes for great times for the Freeride Team to get together.

With so many riders and training days, and comps, it can be hard to get the team's schedules to work together.

So I was stoked with the school holidays as it gives us the chance to get out on the hill together.

So Tim, Mack, Beau, Raph, Hayden, Luke and I spent a blue bird day together at Cardrona.

I surprised the team with an honorary member for the day, Travis Parker.

The team and Travis both fizzed at riding together, showing each other a thing or two on the slopes, and having the opportunity to hear from someone that has made a great name for himself in the business, was invaluable, as they are all working so hard to be part of the business.

Great riding, great conditions, and a great crew made for a super fun day!

peace amy

First Snow of the season

It's here already team...winter that is, Wanaka woke to a beautiful wintery mountain scene this morning with snow covering the local mountains including the top 1/3 of Mt Roy as you can see in the photo, taken from the window above my desk. The other pic is from Cardrona this morning, they have 10-15cm of fresh snow on the ground. This should get people excited for the upcoming winter. And so should our big Easter Winter Clearance sale on this weekend with tons of winter gear including boards, skis outerwear and goggles at crazy prices, so if you're in the area get down to the dedicated sale shop on Helwick St next to the Kodak shop.
The long range forecast for winter from the Moon Man( Ken Ring) is for a very cold winter with lots of snow, can't get better then that really can you. I'm so amped for this winter( missed the whole of last winter with a bung knee) i can't wait to go for a slide. I'm sure you feel the same.

Bring on the snow.
Matt
